There are lots of graphics and videos inside. Actually, I meant to do in that way such that it eases viewers/presenters a lot. In case we lost this simple but elegant website design for a renderer, I make snapshots of the website and post a blog for them. The website is Solid Angle , the company developing/delivering Arnold Renderer, which I thought the most strong challenger and rule breaker in animation/VFX industry. Dan Maas 是一位好朋友，好的工作夥伴，一位 RenderMan 專家，以及一位創業家。 Dan 和我一同在太極影音 的土星之謎 上頭“出力“，我們在“台灣文化“ 、“產業資訊“、“電腦動畫/產業軟體技術“、“程式開發“以及“新技術的嘗試與導入“ 玩得不奕樂乎。 自去年（2011）夏天，在舊金山拜訪他兩週後（更正確來說，是打擾與麻煩他，非 常感謝他的招待），就一直記得他打算既 [Maas Digital][maasdigital] 後，再 開創另一番事業。如今，他與另一位夥伴成立了 SpinPunch ，於是誕生了這 麼一篇，非正式的僞採訪文出來了:) 原來的英文對談內容請見這一篇 。 ## Q. 請向這個 blog 的讀者們自我介紹一下。 Dan: 我叫 Dan Maas，中文名字是馬一丹。我過去的成果裏頭，最有名的就屬由 Disney 發行的 Roving Mars ，以及在台灣的太極影音參與的 土星之謎 動畫專案，很巧的是，這兩個作品同樣都是 IMAX 高規格等級 的作品。這兩個作品，可以算是我投入電腦動畫產業十多年來的代表作。 Drake: Dan 是道地的美國人，卻說得一口溜得不能再好，有著溫柔與熱氣台灣的口音， 真的，不騙你們，我第一次與他在美國對桌而坐踫面時，他一開口說中文就把我嚇到了! 另一方面，最近美國太空總署（NASA） 很有名的好奇號登入火星計畫 的影片 ， 也是 Dan 抄刀作的。這影片為了科學正確，少了動畫特有的情緒渲染與手法， 可能會沉悶些。 不過請特別注意裏頭的火星景觀，與強卡特 裏頭火星場景相較起來，真實度有得拼。 另外，那台有著六顆輪胎的好奇好，它的 rigging 你可以想想該怎麼做 :D ...

Dan Maas, my best friend and partner. We ever co-work in Digimax on Quantum Quest. He is a RenderMan expert with excellent animation experience and knowledge. Last year, just after he graduated from Stanford Graduate School of Business, he was planning his next business. It turns out in this year, 2012, that he succefully co-founded another company, SpinPunch. {{ flickr drakeguan 6445315283 >}} After spotting this exhibitor DM, it reminds me of one un-answered question: Do we really realize the contribution and advantages of Pixar’s RenderMan? If we don’t, how can we evaluate other renderers (ex, Arnold Renderer) in that soon without any hesitate?

今年的 Stupid RenderMan/RAT Tricks 2011，Pixar 的 Patrick Coleman 給了一個簡短的 trick: Illustrating RenderMan for the Masses 。整個 talk 的目的圍繞在一個主題上： 跟你的奶奶解釋 RenderMan 是怎麼協助電影動畫的。 上頭這個副標不錯吧，也很難吧。事實上，你把上頭的 RenderMan 換成任何一個你熟悉的技術或東西，都一樣困難。試試換成 mp3、電子書、網際網路、Facebook、iPad、App…以我自己來看的話，我想 mp3 是最容易解釋的一點 XD 上頭的影片短短的，但可以稍為搭配一下放出來的投影片 ，裏頭至少有幾個關鍵字，包括像是 bucket, grid, shading，好像就這樣。趕緊拿去試試看，怎麼向你的奶奶解釋你平日的工作內容是什麼吧~
